A Tribute to Late Dr. Kunanantham MBBS, FRCS (Neurosurgery), PhD

Late Dr. V. Kunanantham was born in Jaffna in North of Srilanka and gained his MBBS in 1970 at University of Peradeniya in Srilanka. His first posting was at a base hospital in Deniyaya, in a small town located towards the South of Srilanka. The time Dr. Kunanantham spent in Deniyaya base hospital made him recognise the challenges in improving services for the benefits of people with limited resources and adapting to difficult situations.

Dr. Kunanantham felt the need of advancing in the field of surgery and completed FRCS Part1 in Srilanka and went to UK to continue his studies on Neurosurgery and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. He then went back to Srilanka and worked at Jaffna General Hospital. While working in Jaffna General Hospital , communal violence, and fear of life in the North forced Dr. Kunanantham to leave Jaffna and to settle in back in UK with his family. From 1985 till 1997 , he served at Hull Royal Infirmary hospital. During his stay in UK, he managed to obtain the Fellowship in Surgical Neurology and achieved his PhD in Neuroscience. Dr. Kunanantham had the thirst of sharing his professional knowledge to people in his motherland and fulfilled his desire by being a Visiting Professor of Surgery at the Jaffna General hospital. With his untiring efforts he managed to obtain CT scanners for the hospital to facilitate the diagnoses of patients.

During the year of 1997, Jaffna Medical Faculty experienced the worst crisis and there was a proposal to close the faculty. The Dean of Jaffna Medical Faculty invited Dr. Kunanantham to rebuild and to continue academic activities. With the help of him, the final year medical examinations of students were successfully conducted, and the medical faculty was put back onto rail and is continuing to run smoothly until now.

Dr Kunanantham was involved in developing faculty of Medicine at Eastern University in Batticaloa and served as Acting Dean of the faculty. He was also made a member of University Grants Commission and exhibited his efficiency. Dr. Kunanantham , a person who had such an impact on Tamil community , departed peacefully on 6th August 2006. Let him rest in peace with the satisfaction that he had done his duty in this eternal world.
